A project at grid operator Rendo (Netherlands), involving the removal of a PILC cable route, required an innovative connection solution. The remaining PILC cable needed to be connected to a 240 mm² XLPE cable coming from the same direction. A standard connection would typically require the XLPE cable to be flipped — an operation that demands extensive excavation due to the minimum bending radius. In this case, that wasn’t possible: other pipelines were present underground and the cables were located right next to private property.
The Solution: a LoviSil® Loop joint
The LoviSil® KB loop joint is an innovative connection method specifically developed for situations where cables come from the same direction and flipping them is not possible or desirable. Instead of a traditional medium-voltage cable joint, where cables are positioned opposite each other, the loop joint enables a connection in a loop shape — without physically bending or rerouting the cable.
Technical advantages:
- Space-saving design: Ideal for limited excavation space or underground obstacles.
- Minimal bending radius required: Reduces mechanical stress on the cables.
- Fully protected and reliable: Based on Lovink’s proven LoviSil® technology, featuring liquid insulation for a solid, durable connection.
- Quick installation: Simple and efficient assembly.
This solution is suitable for temporary rerouting but also proves valuable for station looping. Sales Manager Ron Tiedink, who was present at the project, said: “The connection was completed within a day. Less excavation, lower costs, and reduced risks — that’s what we aim for.”
Why it matters
In an energy sector where grid capacity is under pressure and expansion is necessary, it’s essential for technical specialists to know immediately applicable alternatives. The loop joint offers a proven solution that:
- Reduces excavation work
- Shortens installation time
- Optimizes personnel deployment
- Minimizes the risk of cable damage
Commitment to quality and innovation
Lovink Enertech stands for sustainable connections and long-term relationships. By sharing this case, we demonstrate our commitment to supporting the energy sector with solutions that truly work. The LoviSil® loop joint is a great example.
“The loop joint offers a solution that’s not always top of mind, but in specific situations it delivers significant benefits. It’s worth considering this option in technical evaluations,” says Ron Tiedink.
