Impact of climate change on cable infrastructure: LoviSil® solution

The reliability of the electricity grid is crucial for grid operators. Climate change – with warmer summers and changing soil conditions – is making this challenge increasingly complex. An Italian grid operator experienced this in practice when the number of failures in medium-voltage cable joints during the summers of 2015 and 2017 rose to four times the annual average.

Investigation into the causes of malfunctions

Together with the University of Roma “La Sapienza”, the grid operator analyzed 66 cable joints. Three main causes emerged:

  • Overheating due to high ambient temperatures
  • Assembly errors in crimping technology
  • Moisture penetration and water branch formation
The conclusion? Reliable cable connections require robust materials and easier installation processes.

LoviSil®: proven technology against heat and moisture

Lovink Enertech introduced the LoviSil® liquid insulation technology as a solution. This technology offers:

  • High temperature and partial discharge resistance – Reduced risk of failure in extreme heat
  • Excellent moisture resistance – Tested under 2 bar water pressure, ideal for wet soils
  • Easy and safe assembly – No open flames, less chance of errors

From test phase to roll-out in Italy

After successful trial installations in Livorno and Naples in 2023, the grid operator decided on a wider implementation. In the coming months, LoviSil® transition joints will be installed at 12 locations, supported by training in collaboration with Heading Srl. Technicians particularly appreciate the ease of installation and reliability.
Dennis Jansen, Export Manager at Lovink Enertech: “With LoviSil®, we are taking an important step towards a more reliable electricity grid, even under the challenging circumstances of the future.”
