Since the 1970s, Lovink Enertech has been producing high-quality polyurethane resins for low- and medium-voltage cable joints. These resins play a crucial role in both mechanical protection and electrical insulation. But what makes polyurethane resin such a reliable material for MV cable joints – and why is it still successful after all these years?
Moisture resistance: Essential for cable joints
In areas such as the Netherlands – often referred to as “Waterland” because of the wet soil and high groundwater level – moisture exposure is one of the biggest risks to underground cable infrastructure. Polyurethane resin is extremely suitable for these conditions thanks to its high hydrolysis resistance. The resin can handle prolonged exposure to groundwater without compromising its insulating properties.
In addition, it adheres excellently to various materials, such as plastic casings, lead sheaths and metal cable screens. This creates a long-lasting, strong seal against moisture.
Optimal flow and permanent protection of the medium-voltage socket
During casting, the resin has a low viscosity, which means that it flows easily around any contour and into any cavity of the socket. After curing, the shrinkage is minimal, so that all parts remain protected for a long time. These properties guarantee reliable, long-lasting protection against moisture.
Protection against excavation damage
The mechanical properties – such as tensile strength, hardness and impact resistance – provide strong protection. In combination with the outer sleeve, the cured resin forms a solid armor. A cable joint filled with polyurethane often remains undamaged after contact with an excavator.
Safe and sustainable to process
Nowadays, polyurethane resins are supplied in two-compartment foil packages, in which resin and hardener are only mixed just before use. As a result, the installer does not come into direct contact with chemical substances.
In addition, the cured resin is not classified as chemical waste. Residual material may be processed as regular industrial waste – an environmentally friendly solution for people and the environment.
What this means for distribution networks
The use of polyurethane resin for cable joints leads to fewer failures, longer lifespan and more reliable networks. Its unique combination of chemical resistance, mechanical strength and ease of use makes it the ideal choice for medium-voltage cable joints.
