LoviSil® cable joints for Europe’s largest wind farm

Since 2006, the onshore wind project Markbygden, the largest wind farm in Europe, has been under construction in the north of Sweden. Lovink Enertech recently supplied LoviSil® branch joints as a solution to the challenges of extremely low temperatures. Find out why this technology is indispensable for reliable connections in cold climates.

Challenge: extremely low temperatures

The contractor responsible was looking for a robust technique that can withstand cold ground temperatures. Extreme cold often causes assembly problems that cause malfunctions as soon as cables become live.

The solution: liquid LoviSil® silicone insulation

The LoviSil® liquid silicone technique offers:
  • No installation problems at -14 °C
  • Perfect insulation of all parts in the socket
  • Minimal risk of partial discharges due to air entrapment
  • Reliable electrical and mechanical properties in all weather conditions
With a branch joint, a plastic cable can be connected directly to a PILC or XLPE cable . Advantages:
  • Savings on cable length and excavation work
  • Shorter assembly time

Training and successful assembly

After extensive theoretical and practical training, the team installed six LoviSil® branch joints for connections of 800 mm² on 95 mm² polymeric cables. Despite snow and -14 °C, the assembly went smoothly thanks to:

  • Heated tents with heaters
  • Experienced technicians
  • Expert guidance by Lovink Enertech
